Our Seasonal Services & Maintenance division doesn’t take the winter off once hauling & storing floats. These weeks are spent getting your docks & floats in top condition in time for the Spring launch schedule.

What do we recommend for winter maintenance?

Here are a few suggestions to consider:

*Replace the foam flotation with PVC encased flotation*
Many town guidelines now prohibit the use of foam flotation. Don’t get caught off guard - waiting to the last minute to make the change will result in delays in getting your floats in the water on time.

*Install or Replace Bumper Rails*
The bumper rails on your float protect the hull of your boat from dings and scratches on the gel coat.

*Replace Hand Rails, Rolling Casters, and Joints*
These small repairs are the easiest way to keep you and your family safe while on your docks and floats.

*Replace the pile chains and rollers*
These chains secure your floats to the pilings. They see extensive of wear. It is best to replace them when signs of corrosion are visible. Delaying replacement can result is broken chains & disconnections during weather & tidal events.

🔆 Nantucket - Drift Fence 🔆

This 250-foot drift fence was constructed with pilings & timber panels at the base of a dune on Nantucket.

Designed to reduce winds speed & protect coastal erosion, a drift fence allows a dune to grow more naturally by depositing wind swept sand in the right areas, increasing the height & volume, making the dune more resilient to adverse weather.

Failing Concrete Seawall - Cotuit

A failing concrete bulkhead edged this property in Cotuit. We replaced the concrete with a vinyl sheet piling bulkhead. Vinyl sheet piling has a long service life and is corrosion resistant. This structure redesign will reduce the impact of extreme weather and tides, protecting the property edge from erosion. The extended height of the bulkhead provides protection from flooding due to increased tidal surges.

Early in the off season, we worked with the Town

Early in the off season, we worked with the
Town of Dennis to replace a set of stairs at Sea Street Beach. The original set of stairs was a wooden structure and was lost due to heavy storm damage.

This public works project was designed to provide a fixed aluminum staircase anchored into the rocks, able to withstand winds, wave, and tides.

The lower section was designed to be removal for the winter months, preventing future permanent damage.

A system like this provides a stable, safe structure for beachgoers to gain access to the Dennis town beach.

Project After & Before: Embankment Stairs in Chatham

Here is a recent enhancement project on stairs in need of attention. There was heavy structure deterioration and vegetation overgrowth, posing a walking hazard.

The staircase was rebuilt using pressure treated wood for all framing, decking, and handrail. Supported by 4x4 posts and seamlessly connected to a seasonal pier. Additional improvements included clearing of the overgrowth, and a new set of steps to access the shoreline.

Spend a couple of minutes with us at our current project on Sweetheart Creek in Yarmouth.

Dredging the waterways makes for safer navigation with deeper and wider channels. It serves a greater purpose as well.

Dredging a channel involves the process of removing sediment, debris, or other materials from the bottom of a waterway to deepen or widen it, improving the flow of water which mitigates tidal surges and reduces flooding damage and erosion.

Improving the circulation of tidal flows also helps reduce the buildup of pollutants, excess nutrients, and sediments. This leads to better water quality, reducing the risk of oxygen depletion and harmful algal blooms.

Did you know we build more than docks & floats?

We recently completed a dune perservation project on Nantucket. The drift fence is designed to mitigate against coastal erosion and help stabilize the sand dune.

A drift fence is an effective, lower cost measure for mitigating coastal erosion. By capturing and accumulating sand, it helps to build & stablize dunes, which in turn act as natural barriers against the forces of coastal erosion, providing protection to both the enviromental and human infrastructure.

How do Drift Fences Work?

**Sand Accumulation**: When the wind blows across a beach, it can carry loose sand particles. A Drift Fence captures some of this sand, allowing it to accumulate on the landward side of the fence. This process helps to naturally build up or maintain sand dunes. Dunes are critical for absorbing the energy of storm surges, preventing the beach from being eroded during high tides and severe weather events. A drift fence helps to maintain & strengthen these dunes over time.
