PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This 250-foot-long drift fence at the base of the dune was constructed with pilings and timber panels. A drift fence is designed to reduce the winds speed and protect coastal dunes from erosion.
This structure allows the dune to grow more naturally, with sand being deposited in the right areas, increasing the dune height and volume, making it more resilient to storms and sea-level rise.
Well-maintained dunes protected by drift fences can enhance the aesthetic appeal of a coastal area and ensure beach access can continue without the impact of severe erosion.
